Rev. Michael Pickles was the first
ordained Methodist minister to settle in Sussex. His appointment was
procured by George G. Hayward. He had been sent from England to New
Brunswick as a missionary and was the first saddlebag preacher in the
Sussex Vale circuit, an area which was very large, covering some 37
preaching places within its bounds.
